Planning a Nigerian wedding reception in Maryland

Aso-ebi, the MC, the grand entrance, spraying money and choosing enough hours.

A Nigerian wedding reception is a celebration on a grand scale: matching aso-ebi, a lively MC, a grand entrance, generous food and a dance floor full of spraying. A little planning makes it run smoothly for you and your guests.

Plan for the real guest count

Guest lists often grow as relatives and friends of the family are invited. Plan seats for everyone you expect plus a buffer, and check the venue’s permitted capacity for your layout before you send invitations.

Aso-ebi and colours

Choose your aso-ebi colours early so the decorator can match linens, florals and lighting. Two colours that work together, such as wine and gold, look striking across a full room.

The MC and the running order

A good MC keeps the energy high and the night on time. Share a running order with the MC and the venue manager: the families’ entrance, the couple’s grand entrance, prayers, the cutting of the cake, the first dance and the open dance floor.

Spraying money

Spraying is one of the happiest moments of the night. Ask guests to bring $1 bills, and choose two trusted people with bags or boxes to collect the money from the floor as it falls, so it is safe and nobody slips.

Food and drink

Jollof rice, small chops and the rest of the menu need serving space and a clear time. Confirm the venue’s caterer policy before you book your caterer.

Choose enough hours

Receptions often run long, and decorators need time to set up. Our Grand Occasion package gives you twelve hours with setup and cleanup inside them, a day-of coordinator, AV for the speeches and two security officers. See every rate on our rates page.
